Since at least the 1960s, visitors to the forest around Watersmeet and Paulding in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula have reported encountering a strange red light. It is said to rise up like an ember, grow in size and intensity, and then disburse in a haze. This phenomenon is repeated almost nightly, week after week. The Paulding Light became so well known that Ripley’s Believe it or Not offered a cash reward to anyone who could determine its origins. Unlike other spook lights, this one has been recorded on film by the local media. Its first reported sighting was by a group of teenagers in 1966. They claimed the light shone so brightly that it lit up the interior of their car. Ten years later, Elmer Lent and Harold Nowak had a more dramatic encounter. They saw not one, but two lights that alternated colors between red and green. The smaller light appeared to move around the other. Some researchers concluded the Paulding Light is nothing more than car headlights reflecting off the unique terrain, but most locals strongly disagree.

Pere Cheney Witch’s Grave - Rural Crawford County, Michigan
Now a ghost town, the village of Pere Cheney in north-central Michigan has a tragic history. Perhaps that is why its cemetery, which contains the graves of around 90 persons, is rumored to be home to a witch’s grave, as well as many supernatural occurrences. Pere Cheney was originally settled in 1874 by lumberjacks, who believed the site of George M. Cheney’s sawmill was an ideal location to set down roots. In 1881, its population was 922. Just a few years later, however, diphtheria swept through the area and many children died. As the community tried to recover, a fire broke out, and in 1893 there was an outbreak of smallpox, scarlet fever, and diphtheria. Diphtheria, a bacterial infection that mainly affects children, struck again in 1906. By 1818, only 18 residents remained in Pere Cheney, and the village was soon completely abandoned. According to legend, people from surrounding communities deliberately set fire to Pere Cheney to prevent the spread of disease. Others say that the epidemics and fires were caused by a witch who cursed the land after her neighbors banished her to the surrounding wilderness. She was later hung from a tree in the cemetery and her body was burned. To this day, some visitors claim to see her ghost in Cheney Cemetery.
Bowers Harbor Inn - Bowers Harbor, Michigan
The Bowers Harbor Inn is famous for its haunting. Before becoming a resort the house belonged to an elderly couple for many years. Because the lady became quite infirm the husband had an elevator installed. The lady became rather deranged before finally dying, preceding her husband by only a few months. After that the house lay empty for several years. From the time the Bowers Harbor Inn began operating, the employees have reported seeing the wife in a second floor mirror, light switches that turn off and on by themselves, and the elevator taking unrequested trips up and down. Several times the manager has closed the place down for the evening, turning all of the lights off and locking the freezer door, only to find every light in the building (including those behind locked doors) blazing away, and the freezer door unlocked and standing open. There are also unconfirmed reports by patrons of the fireplaces lighting themselves.
