The Legend of Delaware Road: Clarence, New York’s Most Haunted Drive - Clarence,New York

Just outside of Buffalo, in the town of Clarence, New York, lies a stretch of pavement that has earned a reputation as one of the most haunted roads in the Northeast. Known to locals as Delaware Road, this secluded path is shrouded in overhanging trees, dense brush, and decades of bone-chilling urban legends.

If you are a fan of "crybaby bridges," phantom vehicles, or classic American folklore, Delaware Road is a destination that belongs on your paranormal bucket list.

1. The Atmosphere: A Natural Thriller

Even without the ghost stories, Delaware Road is naturally unsettling.

  • The Tunnel of Trees: The road is narrow and winding, with ancient trees that arch over the asphalt, blocking out the moonlight and creating a "tunnel" effect.

  • The Abandoned Feeling: While located in a suburban county, this specific stretch feels isolated from the rest of the world. In the dead of night, the silence is heavy, broken only by the rustle of the surrounding woods.

2. The Legends: Why It’s Called "Haunted"

For over 50 years, teenagers and ghost hunters from across Western New York have shared stories of eerie encounters along this road.

  • The Phantom Apparitions: The most common report involves a woman in white or a hitchhiker who appears on the shoulder of the road, only to vanish when a car’s headlights hit her.

  • The "Handprint" Phenomenon: Like many legendary haunted spots, visitors often apply baby powder or flour to their car’s bumper. Legend says that if you stop on the road and turn off your lights, the spirits of children will try to "push" your car to safety, leaving tiny handprints in the dust.

  • The Ghostly Station Wagon: Some locals claim to have been followed by a vintage station wagon or a dark truck with only one headlight that disappears into thin air when pursued.

3. The Dark Folklore: The "White Lady" and Beyond

Many of the stories are tied to a tragic (though historically unverified) tale of a woman who lost her life—or her family—in a car accident on one of the road’s sharp curves.

The Legend: It is said that she still patrols the road, looking for her lost children or trying to warn drivers to slow down so they don't meet the same fate.

4. Tips for Your Visit

  • Location: Delaware Road runs between Clarence Center Road and Newrich Road in Clarence, NY.

  • Respect the Residents: While the road itself is public, much of the surrounding land is private property. Do not trespass, and keep noise levels down to respect the people living nearby.

  • Safety First: The road is narrow and has several blind curves. If you plan to pull over to "test" the legends, make sure your hazard lights are on and you are not obstructing traffic.

  • Best Time to Visit: For the full effect, a foggy autumn night is the quintessential time to experience the "vibe" of Delaware Road.

Final Thoughts

Delaware Road is a perfect example of how local geography and imagination can blend to create a legendary landmark. Whether it’s a "glitch in the matrix," a group of restless spirits, or just a very atmospheric drive, a trip down this Clarence backroad is an experience you won't soon forget.

Have you ever braved the curves of Delaware Road at midnight? Did you see the lady in white, or just the shadows of the oaks?

Traveler’s Note: While in the area, consider visiting the nearby Clarence Hollow for some antique shopping and a taste of the town's more "earthly" history!

Warning: Rumors of a kid beaten pretty badly, please do not stop, it may not be safe.

I live down the road from there and yes this place had a bad feeling and history on this road. Its safe if your in a group. Its very interesting if you turn off your lights and get out of the car. Be sure to leave the feeling there dont take it home with you. I will agree this place makes me very depressed and saddness over this road. GO WITH A FRIEND!

I went there last night. There were 4 of us total. I was completely awake and alert before turning on that road. I fell asleep 30 feet into the road. After we turned off the road, I woke up. I thought it was strange. We turned around and went down the road again, and I fell asleep again, around the same distance in.

Me and four other friends went there tonight Friday the 13th, When we got there it was all foggy, We drove up and down a few times.. nothing happend, but right when it hit 2:00 a.m, the freeky shit started to happen.. We were starting to leave and one of my friends said fucking retards.. One second later as another one of my friends was recording there was a call by a restricted number, She answered it noone said anything so she hung up, Of course we got the hell outa there, Then we went back.. We got to the part were there was just trees and we shut off the car got out our phones and started recording, then we start talking, asking it to break a tree branch or move a bush if there was a presence there, Indeed a tree snaped.. then we started to whistle and we started to hear whistleing back, we said wistle twice for yes and once for no.. Okay..We ask it if it wants us to leave it whistled twice but we stayed, We keep driveing up and down ..then a car passes us, We look back and we see a guy with boots but very visual from down, up staring at the car that went by it and then we see him walk towards us, We finally left because at that point we were tripped the fuck out. After that experience I will always belive in paranormal activity, I belived in it before but now I had a experience with a ghost,.. Ill remember that for the rest of my life, but I do think its a perfect place if your trying to make someone belive in ghosts.. They'll belive after that experience..

As a long term resident of clarence/ clarence center, you best be aware of the true history of that soil!
That are is known for fact to have very evil acts taken place long ago. linchings, unclean rituals, and murder have rendered that ground unholy.
I only say this because, as a "sixth sensitive", if you go and toy and provoke with the wrong mindse you will bring out of those woods something that will follow you for good if you dont know how to remove it.....
View this as a warning!
please be wise as to explore that area!
evil and the unclean is not a joke! the ramifications could cost you greatly...
be safe

last night, june 6th 2013, myself and 4 friends went out there. i had been there neumerous times before with a different group of people and never experenced anything, but last night was different.. my 4 friends had never been out there, only i had. we parked by the bar as we usually have and began walking the road. we seen a blue flashing light down the road and decided to investigate. the light began getting closer and closer, it wasnt on the whole time it popped up in moderation for about 3-5 seconds each time. we all got a nausious and uneasy feeling. the light popped up beihind my one friend and a full ody white appartion showed up and had its hand outstreached to my friend. (mind you we were ALL sober)we all began to run back to the car. my friend flew forward and just before we drove off she puked in the parkinglot. we got in the car started driving down to c if we could find a reason for this unsightly incident. as we were driving we seen a crouching person scurry across the road and a random fog began to cover the car upward until we got back onto goodrich.. when we got home my friend who the appartion popped up next to had scraches and blistering on her forarm on theside we seen the thing on, and my other friend had deep scratches when she said she felt she got punched inbetween her shoulder blades... it was serious f***** freaky ad there was no logical reasoning for this to occur..
