The Whispering Echoes

In a quiet, mist-shrouded village nestled high in the mountains, there was an old abandoned well that the locals refused to approach after sunset. According to neighborhood legend, if you leaned over the edge at midnight and whispered your deepest, darkest secret into the depths, a voice from below would answer back—not with a solution, but with the secret of another soul who had spoken into the well before you.
One cold October night, a young traveler named David decided to test the tale. Driven by curiosity and a touch of arrogance, he crept up to the mossy stone rim just as the clock struck midnight. He leaned in, smelled the damp, metallic air, and whispered softly:
"I left my best friend behind when the river flooded, just so I could save myself."
For a long moment, there was complete silence. Then, a low, cold breath hissed up from the darkness, carrying a hollow voice:
"A girl in the next town poisoned her sister out of jealousy."
David shivered. The legend was real. Thrilled by the creepy secret he had gained, he turned to walk back to his inn. But as he took his first step away from the well, he heard a faint, frantic voice coming from inside his own head.
It was whispering his secret—over and over again—to someone else.
Panicked, David clamped his hands over his ears, but the voice inside his head grew louder, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of heavy, dripping footsteps rising up from the bottom of the well.
He looked back in horror. The shadow pulling itself out of the stone rim wasn't a spirit. It was the physical manifestation of his guilt, given life by every dark secret the well had ever swallowed.
And it was coming to claim the story's rightful owner.
