Old Brewery Hill Spook Light - Le Seur, Minnesota

A set of railroad tracks run along the Minnesota River south of Le Seur. It is here that local residents say they have seen strange lights in an area known as Old Brewery Hill. The hill acquired its name from a man named George Kienzli, who built a brewery on the hill in 1875. For a while, the brewery was quite successful. Unfortunately, it was forced to close and eventually burnt down. The brewery left behind two cellars, dug deep into the hill. According to local legend, a transient took up residence in one of the cellars and the red light from his lantern could be seen from the town at night. After many years, the man died, but his light remained. Local residents continued to see his red light bobbing and weaving along the railroad tracks south of town. In one incident, a brakeman stopped his train because it looked like he was headed straight towards a man holding a lantern in the darkness. When he and the conductor got out to look around, nothing was there.

Mary Jane’s Grave - Middletown, Minnesota

Deep in the swampy woods north of Spirit Lake and the Minnesota-Iowa border, lies Loon Lake Cemetery. Now abandoned, fewer than 18 of the original 67 headstones remain. According to legend, in 1881 the townspeople of the nearby village of Petersburg accused an 18-year-old girl named Mary Jane Terwileger (sometimes simply known as Mary Jane) of being a witch and beheaded her. She was buried on a hill in Loon Lake Cemetery. Their troubles with witches did not stop there, however, and they saw fit to execute two more young women in subsequent years. The graves of these women became something of a local tourist attraction, so their headstones were removed to protect them from vandals. Unfortunately, the exact location of Mary Jane’s grave has been forgotten, and legend says that anyone who walks across it will die within 72 hours. According to one account, “This was perpetuated by reports of a young man who walked over the grave while hunting in the area. On the way home, a heavy fog ascended, and after he pulled his car over, he suffered carbon monoxide poisoning.” The cemetery is believed to be haunted by other anguished spirits as well.

Bertha’s Grave in Lakeside Cemetery - Itasca County, Minnesota

Located at the southern tip of Trout Lake off Crooked Road, just north of Trout Lake Road, the tiny rural graveyard of Lakeside Cemetery is just a collection of scattered headstones, at least to the casual observer. According to local legend, however, it is home to the grave of a notorious witch named Bertha. Bertha Maynard was born on January 26, 1872 and died January 27, 1910, exactly one day after her 38th birthday. Not much is known about her life, but the legend has been around for many decades. Bertha’s grave sits alone at the bottom of the hill, because her family did not want it to be moved with the others when they were relocated due to concerns over flooding. Due to frequent vandalism, however, her headstone disappeared for seven years until it was replaced at the request of the family. This led to rumors that her headstone moved around and became invisible on Halloween. Bertha’s ghost has also allegedly been seen lurking in the cemetery.

Mystery Road 660 - Forest City,Minnesota

Mystery Road 660 is more than just a road. It is a place where history, legend, and mystery collide, creating a spine-chilling experience for those who dare to visit. This road, also known as Gravity Hill or Indian Ghost Hill, is located near Forest City, an unincorporated community in Meeker County, Minnesota. Forest City was founded in 1857 and named for its location near the Big Woods, a dense forest that covered much of southern Minnesota before European settlement . Forest City is also the site of the historical Forest City Stockade, which played a significant part in the Dakota War of 1862, a violent conflict between the Dakota people and the United States government over land and resources. The stockade was built by settlers as a refuge from the attacks, and it still stands today as a museum and a reminder of the tragic events that took place.

But there is another story that haunts this area, a story that involves a strange phenomenon that defies the laws of physics. According to legend, if you drive to Mystery Road 660 and put your car in neutral on a level spot, you will feel your car being pulled backwards by an unseen force. Some people say that this is caused by the ghosts of Native American children who died in a massacre nearby, and they are trying to push your car away from their sacred land. Others say that it is a natural optical illusion that makes the road appear level when it is actually sloped. Whatever the explanation, many visitors have reported feeling uneasy, dizzy, or even having headaches while on this road .

Mystery Road 660 is not easy to find, as it is located on a rural dirt road surrounded by farmland and woods. You have to drive through Forest City and take County Road 330 until you reach 660th Avenue. Then you have to turn left and look for a spot where the road bends slightly and there is a line of pine trees on the right side. This is where you should stop your car, turn off the engine, and shift to neutral. Then wait and see what happens. Some people claim that they have rolled backwards for several feet or even up to a quarter mile. Others say that they have seen strange lights or heard eerie noises while on this road.

If you decide to visit Mystery Road 660, be careful and respectful of the locals who live nearby. They might not appreciate strangers trespassing on their property or disturbing their peace. Also, be aware that this road might not be safe at night or in bad weather conditions. You don't want to get stuck or have an accident on this haunted road. And if you do encounter something paranormal, don't panic and try to stay calm. You might just be experiencing one of Minnesota's most mysterious and fascinating attractions.
