Edna Collins Bridge - Putnam County, Indiana

Believed to be haunted by the ghost of a young girl, Edna Collins Bridge was built in 1922 and spans Little Walnut Creek along County Road 450 N, west of Glenn Flint Lake. It is the only covered bridge in Indiana to be named after a woman, but it is not Edna Collins who haunts it. In the late 1920s, the story goes, an adolescent girl used to play around the creek near the bridge. Her family lived nearby, and they would leave her to play while they drove into town. On the way home, they stopped at the bridge and honked three times. Usually, their daughter would join them, but on that day, she did not appear. Her father found her body floating in the flooded creek. According to legend, the laughter of a young girl can sometimes be heard near the bridge. If you stop your car on the bridge and honk three times, the girl’s apparition will appear. Some visitors have even seen her ghost sitting in their backseat!

Sim Smith Bridge - Montezuma, Indiana

The bridge used to lay on the path of Pikes Peak Highway, which ran from New York to Los Angeles. According to legend, in 1890 a young mother was carrying her baby home to Montezuma. She reached Sim Smith Bridge at dusk and hurried across. Unfortunately, a rider was driving a horse and buggy quickly in the opposite direction. It was too late to stop when he finally saw the woman, and both her infant and she were brutally crushed beneath horse hooves and buggy wheels. From then on, riders heard the sound of a buggy coming across the bridge, but none would emerge. Local fishermen sometimes saw a horse and buggy enter the covered bridge, but never come out the other side. Still others have seen the figure of a young woman and her baby in the shadows.

The Moody Light - Francisville, Indiana

Sitting along a narrow stretch of rural road just outside the town of Francisville, observers are occasionally treated to the sight of a red, yellow, or white ball of light that appears in the distance. According to legend, if you were to flash your car headlights three times, the light will appear and move slowly towards you. There are two explanations locals have for the light. Both involve a farmer named Moody and a tragedy that befell his daughter. In one version of the tale, the farmer’s daughter was kidnapped and killed. When the farmer pursued her captors, he was killed as well. The light is his ghost continuing the search from the afterlife. In the other version, the light belongs to a lantern the farmer held while searching for his daughter. Paranormal researcher Dale Kaczmarek has an alternative explanation. He staked out the road and believes the Moody Light comes from car headlights on a parallel road. At a certain point, the road dips down and turns off at an angle, so the oncoming headlights appear to vanish into the darkness.

Bloody Mary’s Grave - Vernon, Indiana

Tiny Baldwin Cemetery sits in the woods at the end of a drive off South County Road 25 W (Tunnel Mill Road), south of Vernon, Indiana. It is flanked on two sides by an exaggerated meander in the Muscatatuck River. For generations, local residents have searched for the grave of a woman named Mary Smith or Mary Crist, located somewhere in Baldwin Cemetery. The legend is so popular that every year the Jennings County Historical Society and Jennings County High School Drama Club include a vignette about Mary during their annual ghost walk. There are many stories about Mary, including one account claiming she was a witch who was hanged from the branches of a large tree in the cemetery and then buried beneath it. In 2003, a woman claimed to use a dowsing rod to locate Mary’s grave beneath a large tree. According to the Jennings County Historical Society, Mary and her sister Gladys lived alone on a farm in the 1830s. One night, an unidentified assailant raped and murdered Mary and escaped into the darkness. Months after her burial, a drunken man was staggering through the cemetery when he tripped and fell over her grave. The ghost of Mary appeared wearing a bloody nightgown, and the man fled in terror. Many also believe that if you step on Mary’s grave, blood will gush from the ground.

Hannah House - Indianapolis, Indiana

The sickening smell of rotting flesh drifts from a second-floor bedroom here, and mysterious cold spots seem to move about under their own volition. Sometimes, the apparition of a bearded man in a black frock coat can be seen. This Italianate mansion was built in 1858 by state legislator Alexander M. Hannah, but it was not until 1967, after the house had sat vacant for five years, that strange things started happening. Psychics say the overpowering stench of death on the second-floor comes from a stillborn child, whose birth was artificially induced after it started to putrefy within the body of Elizabeth Hannah. The apparition of Alexander Hannah was last reported in 1972, standing on the second-floor near the stairway arch. The ghost of an unidentified woman was reported near a window on the same floor, and phantom slaves have been seen hiding in the basement. Other eerie effects, such as moving chandeliers and picture frames, and unaccountable sounds, have been witnessed by television crews investigating the grand but spooky old house. (Indianapolis is at the center of the state, at the intersection of I-65, I-70, and I-74. The graves of Alexander and Elizabeth Hannah are in the Crown Hill Cemetery. Next to them is a small, unmarked tombstone with only a single date. Take I-465 to U.S. Hwy 31 north. The Hannah mansion is on the corner of National Avenue and Madison Avenue. Hannah House, 3801 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46225. Phone: 317-638-4264.)
